William Norvell, Jr.

Bill Norvell heads the firm's Intellectual Property Litigation section with more than 35 years of experience in the areas of patent, trademark, trade secrets, and copyright law. He has represented clients in a variety of technology areas, including oil field equipment, chemical compositions, medical equipment, pharmaceuticals, building materials, computer hardware and software (including e-commerce software), electronic communications products and services, optical lens, electronic safety communications equipment, lighting equipment, sub-sea pipeline devices, pneumatic and hydraulic devices and control systems, mechanical fluid agitation devices, and fluid flow meters and associated electronic equipment. Mr. Norvell has represented clients as plaintiffs and defendants in matters relating to preliminary and permanent injunctions, and to seizures of counterfeited and infringing goods, as well as in appeals and procedural orders in appellate courts. He has also been engaged as an expert witness and consultant in numerous patent, trade secret, and unfair competition matters.

Representative Cases
  • Represented a client/inventor in a federal court trial involving fraud and infringement of patent, copyright and trademark. First time in American jurisprudence that a foreign patent tried to verdict
  • Prosecuted industrial valve counterfeiters for trademark infringement
  • Prosecuted several celebrated trade secret cases against former employees and their new companies
  • Obtained judgment of validity and infringement in both a bench trial in patent, trade secret and copyright action, and contempt proceeding affirmed by Federal Circuit three times
  • Defended several combined patent and Lanham Act cases, receiving jury verdicts affirmed by the Federal Circuit
  • Negotiated settlement in patent, copyright, and trademark litigation on behalf of foreign client against major telemarketing retailers
  • Negotiated settlement just prior to trial in a patent case regarding truck design
  • Defended client in jury trial regarding design patent and trade dress infringement; affirmed on appeal
  • Represented an American distributor of industrial bandsaws in a case involving literal and willful infringement
